My memories of a #madeofgreat go back to my working career where a college pass out joins with great dreams and expectations hoping to make it big in the Industry. Here you meet many who ensure that you are pressurized and pushed to the limits and after a year or two the same enthusiastic youth takes a back seat eventually realizing that he too is part of the large crowd of millions who leave their home early morning in search of their bread and butter and are part of a monotonously running system which never changes. Slowly the youth gets the same color and texture of the crowd of those millions and fades away becoming one among them. After some more years, he does not have any dream of making it big and pulls on his life and career like a worn out coat. We all should understand here that ‘Living’ is different and ‘Surviving’ is another. Living can be dangerous, but is definitely exciting while Surviving is just Pulling on in life and is boring for sure. This is the crucial stage in any youth’s life after spending some years in the industry of his chosen career, maybe his/her last chance to stand out in the crowd. This is the place where every working individual has to reach and this is the stage which seals his entire career thereon.
After following the same trend mentioned and after spending a good 10 years of my life without achieving much in companies I worked for, I started working in an organization where I met my #madeofgreat. We will name him as Mr.X as being a humble human being that he is, he has asked me not to name him anywhere in my posts. So Mr. X was the Executive Director of the firm I had joined as a Senior Executive. There was already a system in place with over 500 employees and I was at one of the lowest positions in the hierarchy. I was following a 9-6 job with nothing much to do except generate fresh leads and clients through my field visits. Mr. X was introduced to us in one of the Induction programs and except for the pleasantries we had not exchanged much of a conversation.
As luck would have had it, One of the Branch manager was fired overnight and I was called upon by the Director and was offered a temporary charge of the Branch (looking at my past experience) till a new branch manager was appointed. I decided to make the most of it and gave it my best. I made it a habit to stay till after office hours and ensure that the day’s work and accounts were closed the same day. On the 9th day of my taking charge, Mr.X happened to make a sudden visit to the branch and asked to check the records for the previous nine days. I kept wondering as to why Mr.X wanted to check the records for the Tenure of my being the Branch Manager. I realized only later that he wanted to check my working style and seemed pretty happy with it. He asked me to accompany along with him on a High profile client visit the next day and was lucky to spend the whole day with my #madeofgreat. Mr.X turned out to be a monster when it came to work and worked till late hours of the evening to ensure that the All-India network of the company functioned well. He was known to take dare devil business decisions which always clicked the right way. The chairman called him every fortnight and warned him of dire consequences if something went wrong but never did anything, probably because he knew that Mr. X always took the decisions and the risks to take the company ahead. The chairman Trusted the authenticity, reliability, simplicity and the innovative actions of Mr.X completely. During my tenure with the company, I saw that Mr.X had taken the company sales up by a whooping 37%. Not only was he himself #madeofgreat, but he also did seek excellence and promoted self belief. Whenever he saw an individual with Leadership qualities, he went out of the way to help the person grow. I was one of the lucky ones, he inspired me a lot and I was in awe of his strength and dedication at 55+ of age. I made it a point to meet him once a day after that and spend some time with him to learn from him. He too developed a liking for me and eventually I was given the full time charge of a Branch Manager. He called me the same day and asked me what my plans were and how did I intend to pursue them. I assured him that I would give him and the company my best.
From that day onward we always went together when we had a high profile and important business visit. He complimented me for my presentation skills which he effectively used in client visits and that helped us bag many contracts. He gave me a free hand to run the Branch my way and the results were soon seen. He allowed and encouraged me to take calculated business risks which paid off well and my Branch Sales figures shot up to almost Double. In the next APM, my Branch topped the All-India Network with the best sales figures and both my Asst Branch Managers got rewards for best performance. The Managing Director and the Chaairman too were present for the APM and they praised my presentation skills. Mr.X had inspired me to ‘Live’ and not ‘Pull on life’. I made one of the finest presentations of my life during that APM which propelled me to the Regional manager post and then the AVP of the company in two quick promotions in the coming year. My example is still given in the same company even today of the meteoric rise from a Senior Executive to the position of an Asst Vice President in 3 years, something which no one has yet achieved in the 23 years of the company’s history. I feel proud thinking of my achievement in that organization, but I always remain indebted to Mr.X who taught me how to Live and not Survice. He was the one who encouraged me to start my own venture when I got the necessary resources and help to my disposal and gave me a grand farewell. While parting my #madeofgreat gave me a simple Mantra which I have already shared with you. He said “ Living can be tough, but it is always exciting. Whenever you walk along with others on the streets of this city, you will feel the adrenaline rush if you are ‘Living’. So never ‘Survive’ in life, dare to do something different and keep a positive approach to life. Failure is always followed by success. Learn to take failure in your stride and leap towards success again and again till you succeed.” I still recollect his words which have helped me achieve all what I have in my life. He will forever remain my hero and my #madeofgreat.
