Monsoon season is here and it is a bliss to get relief from the scorching heat. However, Monsoon brings with it a whole lot of viral infections. Sadly, our little ones have lower immunity and are the first ones to catch these seasonal infections. Below are a few hacks and home remedies for cough and cold in kids, that you can try.
Keeping your kids hydrated when they are suffering from cough and cold is really important. The logic is, when there is sufficient water in the body, the mucous membranes produce thinner mucus which is easy to get rid of through the nose. As it is, kids have problems blowing their nose so, you don’t want their mucus to get thicker.
Use a humidifier
There are cool mist humidifiers available in the market and online as well. You may use them to add moisture to your room especially, when the kid is sleeping. Using Air conditioners and heaters causes the indoor air to get very dry which in turn leads to aggravated cough by irritation of the mucous membranes. If you do not want to invest in a humidifier, you can just boil some water in an electric kettle and leave it in your room at some place safe. This doesn’t work as good as the humidifier but does a pretty ok job.
Use a higher pillow
If your kids are using a pillow, give them a slightly higher one to use when they have blocked nose or cough. This helps them in sleeping better by helping the mucous drain.
Saline Nasal Drops
These are a good way to loosen up the mucus. Just ask your kid to blow their nose, put in a spray of saline Nasal Drops and let them lie down for a couple of minutes. Blow nose again, a lot of blockage should clear up. For smaller kids, nasal suction devices may be used after putting saline drops.
The heat from steam helps in loosening up the mucous and helps in easy removal. You may use an electric kettle in the bathroom and let the water boil for a good 10-15 minutes while you sit in the bathroom with your kid. This is one of the simplest Home Remedies for cough and cold in kids
Massage with natural vapor rubs
There are plenty of vapour rubs available in the market that can be rubbed onto the soles of feet, back and chest and help by providing some relief from the symptoms of cough and cold.
However, if you would like to make your own, try this. Heat up some Mustard oil really well. Take it off the flame. Next, put in some tablets of Camphor in it and stir until completely dissolved. Store this oil for use over the next 2 to 3 days. This has to be rubbed onto the chest and back before your kid goes down for a nap or before bedtime.
Honey and Ginger
Take some Honey and mix it with Ginger juice. This sweet-spicy home remedy can be offered with warm water. Some kids might be reluctant in taking this though, in that case I suggest adding small amounts of this to their milk, every time.
Raw Haldi works best for this remedy. Boil some Raw Turmeric in Milk, sweeten with Honey or sugar and offer it to kids before bedtime. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory agent.
The seeds as well as leaves of Tulsi are considered very good in doing away with the symptoms of cough and cold. You can make a herbal Tulsi tea with some Turmeric, Honey, Moti Elaichi and offer it to your kids.
