Review:
I bought this copy of ‘The Diary Of An Immortal’ with a slight hesitation as this is not one of my favorite genres when it comes to reading. David J Castello has indeed done a fine job by writing a fantasy against real and Historic events between 1945-1959.
Fantasy reads were never a part of my reading likes, but this one left me glued to the book from start to end. One reason for this is the fact that it has been set against a backdrop which all of us are keen to know more about. The incidents are woven so well with the real life history that one does not feel its fantasy anymore after a while. Steven, the narrator of this novel accidentally finds the magic pills which are immortality pills. This happens during the overthrow of the Dachau Prison camp. Soon he realizes that life spreads from the Jazz and lights of the New York City to the Buddhist monasteries which are calm and quiet and which teach him many things about life and its meaning.
Chang Sou and Chow Li from the Buddhist world though preaching peace, always look at gaining power. Power to control something or the other. Chang Sou wants to control the planet and Chow Li wants to finish Chang Sou. On the other hand, there is America and New York city which has an entirely different culture. Steven is able to travel to both these places and see the differences which he narrates very well. Steven gets involved in all this only because of his wish to get back the years he lost in the second world war. The reader is made to think and argue whether immortality and everlasting life is actually good for the mankind or not.
Recommendation:
The Diary of an Immortal (1945-1959) is an interesting Novel which keeps you engrossed. The author has succeeded in creating the aura and atmosphere of reality while actually narrating a fantastical story. He has introduced interesting characters in the Novel which make it more complex yet Full. I rate it 5/5 stars and recommend this read for fans who love alternative history and Fantasy books.
