My opening statement would be “All of us are mentally ill.” Having said that I will also add that the level of the illness and the intensity and damages caused by such illness may vary from person to person. Clinically, there are over 220 types of Mental illness documented, but from a psychological point of view, any action which a human does which pushes him or her to go beyond his/her normal capacity/limits to achieve anything could be termed as Mental illness. Some people are eager to get success, some want to earn more money than others, some want to get their love by hook or crook and many others push themselves more than once in life to get what they want. The hunger and want to get more than what we are supposed to, could be termed as a type of Mental illness. The only difference is we all move in the society posing as normal Human beings, while some with extreme medical conditions end up in rehabilitation centers and hospitals.
So when we look at the ones who are undergoing treatment at hospitals and under medical supervision, rather than just sympathizing with them, we all should make a collective effort to connect with them and try to bring them back into the mainstream society. It is very difficult to live alone, alienated as the society has pushed you outside their circle and no longer wants you. The pain and sufferings which the person undergoes makes him/her more violent.
Many non-government organizations like Basic needs and The Banyan have been working over several years to help the poor and middle income group to promote good mental health. Let us support them with what we can and in whichever way we can to make them and such other organizations stronger. They will return our help by taking care of the ones who need help. Please do take time to go through their work and contact the concerned people for donations and voluntary help for any of their programs.

Well said UK….we are all mentally ill one way or the other and should be more supportive of people whose illness requires extra help
Yes Lata. My heart goes out to all of them..
We’re all mental, you say, but with varying intensities. I agree. Looking from a different angle, we could also say that the ones with the tag ‘mentally ill’ might be specially talented in a unique way, which is why they don’t fit in to the society. Maybe if we all search ourselves, we’ll find a deeper truth about how very unique we are if we stopped believing in moving along with the tide and started beleiving in individuality.
Lovely take Darshana.. Thought provoking.. 🙂 Thanks for dropping by..
Mental illness is scary–the real kind. But family support and love can cure it to a large extent.
