Karavali Seafood Restaurant is a Non-veg delicacies joint specializing in Karavali cuisine, but also serves some basic Veg Food too along with some Tandoori dishes. This food review happened because I was in Manipal a couple of weeks back for #DiscoverManipal campaign and had a chance to taste some authentic dishes here.
Cuisine History
The coastal region is known as Karavali. Since its coastal region Fish and coconut are found in abundance here and hence coconut is used in practically all dishes of this region. Steaming is primary process or one of the process used in cooking.
Decor
Karavali Seafood Restaurant falls in a lane on the main road at Manipal and is easily visible while traveling as it falls right behind the famous Attil restaurant at Manipal. The Tandoor counter is set-up outside the main dining area and one does not have to go inside to get food. Seating is simple. You can see what is available as the owner gets the catch to show you before making any dish of your choice or what is suggested by the chef. This is more like a simple dhaba so do not expect anything great in ambience here.
Food
Being an Karavali Food joint, the bifurcation is 20:80 for parcels/Home deliveries against walk-in customers. Most customers are repeats who love to eat the mild to spicy yet tasty Karavali food and the since the chef comes down himself to talk to you, he ensures that the the taste remains unchanged. The specialty of the place has always been the Nadan Fish Curry, Prawns SukkaFish Fry and the Neer dosa if you are not going in for the karavali rice. I was greeted warmly by the owner and I preferred sitting inside the joint with my colleagues. I called in the Chef and asked him to give me a tasting of his choice of dishes. That’s always been my thumb rule when I am trying something new.
He gave us some excellent Fry Fish, Prawns Sukka with some Pomfret Fish curry with Neer Dosa and a similar version of Patra ni machchi called the Meen Pollichattu. The food was awesome and the spice was distinctly visible. The dishes had ample coconut , coarsely grated in some and fine paste in some. The coconut oil changes the face of the dish which was evident. The adding of extra curry leaves also left its mark on the dishes.
Plus and Minus
The ambience is not so pleasant if you are looking at privacy with your group, but at the same time you can enjoy the food nevertheless. There is no Air-conditioned seating available. The Veg and Non-Veg foods are equally good as the pure Karavali food and vegetarians will also love going here.
