I first stepped in this Hotel reading the name to be honest… Hotel Sahyadri – Swad Kokancha (meaning aroma of the Konkan region). What followed was sheer torture, mockery of the Konkan area which gives so many delicious dishes with their unique preparations.
Seating: Approx 50 people (including the AC room)
Lunch Hours: 12 noon to 3pm.
Address: Hotel Sahyadri- Swad Kokancha
Parel House, Dr E Borges Road, KEM Hospital, Parel East, Parel, Mumbai
Ambiance: The poorly lit Hotel has typical Mumbai Udipi restaurant style tables and Long wooden chairs. The place needs a facelift from inside definitely..and fast.
Food: We ordered a Surmai (King Fish) Thali priced at 220/- with a Bhakri inclusion and eagerly awaited to taste the flavors of Konkan. What we got in front of us may not be explained in words. Either its written on our face that we are fools (and not food bloggers) or the Owner thinks he is too smart. In either case what we were served was a piece of a large Kupa/ Tuna (not even a Seer fish to make up for what they were promising) Substituting a RS.800/-per Kg fish with a Rs.250/- per Kg fish and expecting a food blogger to not detect it is foolish. I nevertheless kept quiet and quietly had my meal and decided to check with the owner and the person later, who took my order. The Fish curry was no where near the typical Konkan curry and the coconut was hurriedly put in the preparation leaving it raw. The Solkadhi was bland and I realised that either I was at the wrong place at the wrong time or wrong was served here everyday since many new footfalls happen here automatically, it being near the famous KEM hospital.
Service: The person taking the order kept threatening me as soon as I stepped in that I better order all what I want at one go as the Hotel closes for lunch at 3pm. I had walked in at 2.25 pm and half of what I asked for was either over or not available. The waiter was not apologetic at all and appeared keen to send me away without feeding me. I later realised as I stepped out of the Hotel at 3pm sharp that he had taken his meal and was busy nibbling at it, not bothering to check with the last order customers (since he had already threatened them with the last order baton)
Price: All prices are standard as per the nearby hotel rates, so I did not see any reason why the management did such a cheap trick of substituting a cheap fish after ordering the Kingfish. I casually asked the owner (since the waiter looked away as I tried to approach him) as to why the ‘Surmai’ served was not tasting like a ‘Surmai’. The reply which I got was epic and I knew there was no point explaining or educating people there. “I guess you are having Surmai the first time, this is how it tastes” was the answer I got (and I thought eating fish predominantly over 35 years of my life made me an expert). I gave a hint to him saying it tasted like a Tuna and he gave me a dirty look and repeated the same thing again. I gave up.
I came out of the Hotel, looked up at the clear February skies and thanked God that he got me out of this Hotel and promised never to come back again ever..EVER.!!
Review: DON’T GO if you are a food Lover. I saw food murdered in cold blood there. I spoke to a few others who walked out and they said that they had come there the first time as they had an ailing family member admitted at the nearby KEM hospital and this being the nearest, they had dropped in (none said they would come back here again)

I hate when hotel serves substandard food & poor customer service is another key factor which is really important to retain their customers. I like your honest review..

Nice review 🙂
Thank you Anjali.. 🙂
sad!! and i wonder how people can be so stupid in this age… so as to cheat customers!!
Its a common practise Archie. A person who has a relative admitted to the nearby hospital will not really bother to check or focus on food as he he/she has to hurry back to the patient. really sad if this is a regular practise.
No excuse for substituting fish and then sticking to the story that it tastes like that even after being caught at it. Sad to say the least.
He did not have the slightest clue that someone would come so boldly and say it on his face, Doc. At the same time, he had his homework done and the story was ready as acceptance could have meant embarrassment in front of whoever were present at that time.
You should try Malvan Katta a small homely restaurant in Dadar – no great ambiance but you can have authentic Malvani food at reasonable prices
Yes, I have had a meal or two there some years back. They serve authentic food. Thanks for dropping by Sarika. 🙂
This is really bad…people get away with serving cheap ingredients. I guess they do no get many complaints as you said mostly attendants and visitors to the hospital are their clientele and their focus is apparently on other issues…hmm.
Yes Bushra, that is precisely such joints run at one of the most prominent places in Mumbai. 🙂
I am not much of a foodie but someone once said- there is nothing more sad than sad food. A lot of people have been warned now!
🙂 Yes Mridula..Agree absolutely..
