Kanishka Restaurant – A honest Review

The famous Kanishka Veg Restaurant – Jacob Circle (opposite Haji Ali) started operations in 1992-93 and is a Landmark at Haji Ali Junction. Many office going executives meet here over lunch and take a quick meal. It is a highly crowded and popular joint for all Veg food lovers here. Over the years, the focus of the restaurant shifted  to being a multi cuisine restaurant rather than a North Indian food serving joint. It serves South Indian and Chinese food too now, but the specialty food still remains the North Indian food. Recently I had the opportunity to visit this place with some friends who wanted to have a few quick meal while passing Haji Ali. The restaurant welcomes you from 9am to 12 midnight.

Decor

The joint has two floors with the upper floor being the AC Dining Hall and is done beautifully. The Restaurant is fairly crowded on any day and any time being at the junction of one of the most popular places in Mumbai, but there is no waiting. The seating and spacing is ample and one feels at ease. Families would definitely take the ground floor and the first floor AC seating both, depending on their requirement and weather. We took the ground floor this time near the Kitchen window so we could see how things go. Overall the décor is appealing even though being simple. A lot of attention is given to clean up the mess and I liked that.

Food

The North Indian food is good. We ordered some Pav Bhaji, but the Pav seemed to be burned a bit in the process. The bhaji was good though. The Palak Dosa was okay and was not so appealing as the Palak was put as a gravy filling over the Dosa and then rolled over flat and hence it dripped every time we took a bite. The Paneer Kadhai was awesome and the taste was something to remember. The Paneer had been well marinated which gave out the spice flavors and the softness of the Paneer stayed intact making the food experience enjoyable.  Overall North Indian food scored over the other dishes. Will try some Chinese next time I visit this place.

Plus and Minus
To start with the Plus, the restaurant is strategically located and hence they have a great advantage over other restaurants. The crowd will keep coming and there will always be loads of fresh footprints. Foodies like me will definitely go here for the North Indian food, though I would like to see the restaurant improve its quality of South Indian food too.

The Minus is that the Menu card shows too many options and that may be confusing to a regular food eating person. Keeping the Menu simple always goes in favor with the restaurant. The price is about 20% higher than normal I felt.

  1. Sometimes I prefer going to such a restaurant over the “junk food/ fast food restaurants!”
Great review, seems honest, will only know for sure when I visit it too 😉 But I trust you judgement blindly when it comes to food.
